The Luke Del Toro Quarterback Academy has been helping players fully realize their potential on and off of the football field.

Who is Luke Del Toro?

Luke Del Toro is a 2019 graduate of Muleshoe High School in Muleshoe, Texas. While at MHS he lettered in Football, Basketball, and track. During the summer months Luke would attend Air It Out Passing Academy with coach Alan Wartes and Cody Hodges in Amarillo, Texas.

Luke's honors included being named captain of the footbal team junior and senior year, all-state Academic team, all-district honorable mention QB, Muleshoe's 2019 football MVP, Muleshoe's track fighting heart award, Muleshoe's super mule award, Texas Tech National football foundation athletic scholarship recipient, selected to play in the Greenbelt Bowl All-Star game and the ASCO All-Star Classic. He also participated in National honor society, Art, Tennis, FFA, coaches aid for middle school athletics, and class officer.

Luke is marjoring in graphic design at Amarillo College. He is currently playing semi-pro football for the West Texas Sundevils as a defensive back.

Muleshoe High school has produced highly decorated athletes through the years especially at the quarterback position.


Lincoln Riley

One of the most successful mules is Lincoln Riley, Head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners. Lincoln Riley played quarterback and defensive end for Muleshoe High School before graduating in 2002. As a junior in 2000 he helped the Mules reach the state semifinals, where they lost to Forney at Texas Stadium in Irving. While at Muleshoe Riley learned under head coach David Wood. Lincoln was a quick learner and soon became a coach on the field. Riley played Quarterback for Texas Tech but spent more time there coaching than playing. At this time it was known that Lincoln would stay in touch with the Muleshoe coaching staff. Many believe Lincoln was the cause of the 2008 state championship run.

After the 2009 season he left his position as the Red Raiders wide receivers coach to become offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at East Carolina. In 2014, he became the assistant head coach for East Carolina. The next year he was hired at Oklahoma as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Bob Stoops.

Two years into the big job Riley found himself promoted to head coach when Bob Stoops unexpectedly retired in June of 2017. Lincoln is 45-8 as the oklahoma head coach as well as 4 Big 12 championships, Broyels award, Big 12 coach of the year, AP coach of the year, and produced back-to-back Heisman trophy winers. In February of 2021 the Philadelphia Eagles reached out to Lincoln but he declined their offer.

Kyle Atwood

Kyle Atwood, Former Muleshoe 6 sport star, is leading the Coyotes as the head coach of Alice High School. Kyle Atwood played Football,basketball, tennis, golf, track and cross country for the mules before graduating in 2002. Kyle and Lincoln would reach the state semi-finals in football their junior season. Atwood and Riley would conect for more than 1,200 yards in his senior season. As well as being an all-state punter and saftey. After hanging up the cleats the Atwood and Riley duo would lead a Muleshoe basketball team. Kyle was named all-district senior year. Atwood holds the Mens basketball assist record at Muleshoe. Atwood also has multiple state titles in the 800m and 1600m. Cross country state contender for four years. He still holds the 50 second run at Muleshoe. Finishing their senior year Kyle and Lincoln decided they were going to play tennis for the first time. They reached the regional tournament.

coach Atwood obtained his degree in Kinesiology from Texas Tech University. Kyle was a four year letterman on the track and field team where he was a five time All-Big XII Honoree, and part of the Big XII Championship won in 2005.

He started his coaching career in Alice in 2007. He worked under Coach Brent Davis who offered him the opportunity to wok on staffs at both Alice and San Angelo Central. Throughout his five years as an assistant, Coach Atwood served as the special teams coordinator, receivers coach and boys head track and field coach. In 2012, Coach Atwood stepped into his role as the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach at Grape Creek ISD, where he served for five years. He reached the playoffs for the first time in school history in 2014 and then again in 2016. In March of 2017, Coach Atwood accepted the position of Athletic Director/Head Football Coach back in Alice. Over the past three seasons, Coach Atwood has obtained a 22-13 record and won three playoff games.

Garrett Riley

A few years after Lincoln left Muleshoe a new Riley would be under center for the Mules. Riley was the AP All-State 2A Offensive Player-of-the-Year in 2008 after playing a role in four straight playoff appearances. Garrett was a quarterback on the Red Raiders' roster during the 2008-2009 seasons. Both resulted in a combined 20 wins and pair of bowl appearances. Garrett transferred to Stephen F. Austin State in 2010 and helped the Lumberjacks to a Southland Conference title and a No. 1 FCS rank in both passing and total offense.

As a quarterbacks and passing game assistant, he helped Lubbock's Roosevelt High School set four school quarterback and five receiving records in 2011. He earned a bachelor's degree in general business from Texas Tech in 2012.

He earned his first collegiate position in 2012 as running backs coach at Augustana College, rebuilding a Vikings program that was 2-8 a year earlier into a 5-5 team that improved its rushing total by 500 yards in the Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Riley joined the East Carolina Pirate staff prior to the 2013 season as an offensive assistant while pursuing a master's degree at ECU. Garrett would move on to Kansas University where he was hired as an offensive analyst in 2016, he coached quarterbacks in 2017 and also mentored the tight ends and fullbacks. In 2019 Garrett was named running backs coach for Appalachian State. Garrett Riley is now the SMU Offensive Coodinator.

Wes Wood

Mule mainia is spredding all through out Texas at the high school level also. Wes was a fourth-grader when Lincoln Riley quarterbacked the Mules to the 2000 Class 3A Division II state semifinals. Wes looked up to Lincoln and even wore the number 12. While playing for his dad, David Wood, Wes quarterbacked Muleshoe to the 2008 Class 2A DI state championship with a 15-0 record. Wes had 4,532 passing yards, 64 passing TD’s, and 8 interceptions his senior year. Wes was named First Team Associated Press All-State QB, First Team Texas Sportswriters Association All-State QB and Texas Class 2A Offensive Most Valuable Player (AP and TSWA). Also chosen for the Dave Campbell 2A Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player of the All-West Texas Team. Selected by the Amarillo Globe as their Super Team Player of the Year. Set the Panhandle touchdown passing record. Also participated in basketball, track and tennis. Wes took third in the state in the pole vault.

Wes Wood took his talents 30 miles west to Eastern New Mexico University. Wes played in 29 games for the greyhounds. He was selected Honorable Mention All-Lone Star Conference, Named to LSC All-Academic team and was the Offensive Player of the Week vs Angelo State, Greyhound career leader in completions, attempts, completion percentage and total offense. Also holds the ENMU record for single-season completion percentage, third in the Lone Star Conference in total offense per game and fourth in passing yards per game. Passed for over 300 yards on two occasions, with 390 yards and four touchdowns at Incarnate Word and 370 yards at Angelo State. His 97 yard touchdown at ASU was the longest pass play in Greyhound history.

Wes started his coaching debut at Muleshoe as the offensive coordinator. In 2017 He took an offensive coordinator job in Grandview,Texas. Wes Wood spent the 2018 season at Azle. The Hornets went undefeated in District 3-5A Division I and finished with a 10-2 record. Before Wood, Azle averaged just 11 points per game. In Wood's only season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the Hornets improved to scoring 36 points per game. Wes Wood is now the athletic director and head football coach job at Synder High School.
